Das ist eine Überraschung: Microsoft bietet seine Office Apps für iOS als auch Android fortan komplett kostenlos an. Um Dokumente erstellen, bearbeiten und in der Cloud speichern zu können, ist somit keine Office-365-Abonnement mehr vonnöten. Klingt verrückt, doch was steckt dahinter?

Von nun an kann jeder auch ohne ein Office-365-Abonnement Word, Excel und PowerPoint Dateien erstellen, bearbeiten und in der Cloud sichern. Schon vorher war es möglich, kostenlos im Web auf diese Anwendungen zuzugreifen, Microsoft erweitert dieses Angebot nun eigentlich nur. Ermöglicht sei dies durch neue, interne Strukturen und Entwicklungsmodelle. Microsoft-Chef für Marketing Michael Atalla dazu:

It’s an extension of the strategy that we’ve got. It’s not a total strategic shift, as much of an extension of the existing strategy. We’re taking that same user experience we provide online to the native apps of iOS and Android. […] We want to make sure that our customers can be productive across all the devices they have.

By in large we want that core authoring experience in front of all the users that love Office on any device they choose.

Ganz umsonst gibt es das Angebot dann aber doch nicht – zumindest nicht für Unternehmen. Private Anwender dürfen (fast) alles kostenlos benutzen, Unternehmen müssen jedoch bezahlen, sofern man Dokumente bearbeiten will die in OneDrive Business gespeichert sind. Das gleiche gilt für Dokumente welche auf einem Dropbox Business Konto gesichert sind. Wer als Privatnutzer allerdings auf den vollen f setzen will (zum Beispiel grenzenloser OneDrive Speicher oder Analyse Tools), muss auch bezahlen.

Darüber hinaus könn(t)en so mehr potentielle Kunden ein Office-365-Abonnement abschließen.

The nightmare situation for Microsoft is that consumers realize soon that they don’t need Office to create their resume or personal documents, so why should they pay for it on a smartphone or tablet where they’re used to getting free apps.

Abschließend kommentieren die Kollegen von The Verge diese Aktion wie folgt ein: Es ist ein mutiger Schritt von Microsoft, aber zeitgleich auch ein defensiver. Microsoft’s Konkurrenten müssen jetzt (auch) an anderen Stellen suchen, um ihren Office-Angriff zu planen.
