Aktuell können iPad und iPhone Nutzer die Office Flotte von Microsoft kostenlos herunterladen und eingeschränkt ein paar Dinge damit erledigen, ohne dass dafür Kosten anfallen. Dies ist mit dem iPad Pro nicht mehr möglich.

Gegenüber arstechnica hat Microsoft mitgeteilt, dass man die Apps für das kommende iPad Pro nicht kostenlos zur Verfügung stellen wird/kann. Der Grund: Die 10 Zoll Grenze von Microsoft. Das Unternehmen sieht alle Geräte unter 10 Zoll als wirklich mobile Geräte an und ist bereit, dafür kostenlose Apps anzubieten mit den wichtigsten Grundfunktionen. Weil das iPad Pro jedoch nicht einen 9,7 Zoll (wie das iPad Air) sondern beinahe einen 13 Zoll großen Bildschirm besitzt, wird Microsoft dafür ein Office Abo verlangen.

Office on the iPad Pro will require an Office 365 subscription for any and all editing. That’s because Microsoft defines a 10.1 inch cutoff. Anything below 10.1 inches is a “true mobile device” and as such qualifies for free access to the core editing capabilities. But above that threshold and it’s not a “true mobile device” any longer, it’s something else entirely, and it will need an Office 365 subscription as a result … 

Bisher gab es die 10 Zoll Regel nur auf Windows und Android, da das iPad Pro Apple’s erstes Tablet in dieser Größenordnung ist.

Die Office Apps für iOS wurden kürzlich übrigens alle aktualisiert.
